As 2025 draws to a close, Urban Green (UGC) reflects on a year marked by significant progress in sustainable design and environmental responsibility. The team’s commitment to creating low-carbon infrastructure and achieving green building certifications has helped shape Hong Kong’s path toward a more sustainable future. This post highlights some of the key projects and achievements that defined UGC’s year, showcasing practical examples of how thoughtful design can support environmental goals.

Sustainability Certifications for Existing Buildings
Capital Tower received the prestigious BEAM Plus Existing Buildings Final Platinum rating, reflecting its excellence in ongoing environmental management and performance. The building achieved 83% in the management aspect and 100% in site aspect, demonstrating meticulous attention to both operational efficiency and site stewardship. This success showcases UGC’s expertise in optimizing existing buildings to meet the highest sustainability standards.
The A&A works at 153 Wai Yip Street marked a major transformation of an existing industrial building into modern offices, achieving the BEAM Plus New Buildings Final Gold rating. The project demonstrates how adaptive reuse can successfully combine efficiency with sustainability. Through the installation of a photovoltaic (PV) system, the building achieved 26% energy savings, while water-saving measures reduced consumption by 52%. In addition, the building attained Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Good Class, ensuring a healthy and comfortable indoor environment.

Pioneering Low-Carbon Infrastructure
The HKUST High Performance Computing Facilities project is one of the first in Hong Kong to adopt the BEAM Plus New Data Centre assessment, achieving the Provisional Platinum rating, the highest level under this scheme. The facility delivers exceptional energy performance with a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of approximately 1.3, demonstrating advanced efficiency in high-density computing environments. This achievement highlights UGC’s capability to support next-generation digital infrastructure with world-class sustainability standards.

Community Engagement and Education
The new Assembly Hall at Munsang College earned the BEAM Plus New Buildings Final Gold rating for its outstanding environmental performance. Constructed within an active school campus, the building achieves 24% energy savings through renewable energy technologies, including a PV system. The design integrates 39% site greenery, enhancing biodiversity and campus ambience, and sources 97% of materials regionally, reducing transportation impacts. With 46% water savings, the Assembly Hall stands as a model of sustainability in educational environments.

Looking Ahead to 2026
In 2026, UGC will continue to champion sustainable innovation across Hong Kong and beyond. With a growing portfolio in green buildings, infrastructure, and environmental consultancy, we remain committed to advancing a greener, smarter future for all.
